When local hospital radio station Radio Heartbeat invited writers to participate in their Just Write! Competition the volunteers who staff the station expected to find a few entries through the door – especially in the Junior Category. They did not expect that whole classes at local high schools would want to participate but they did. Almost the entire second year English Classes at St. Maurice’s High School in Cumbernauld put pen to paper and sent entries to the competition. There were all sorts of stories and poetry. It was very exciting.

Local businesswoman Denice Reynolds who owns Reflections Video and volunteers at the radio station knows a lot about good writing and has won many awards herself, and was delighted to take charge of the Junior Section of what had become a much bigger venture than anyone would have dreamed possible. She said, ‘The standard of writing was good. The school pupils had obviously worked very hard on their output. Some of the entries made me smile and others were just so clever they made you proud.’

Station Manager Irene Dick and Denice Reynolds met the pupils at one of the last Assemblies before the school broke up for the holidays and Denice happily presented all of the certificates.
Deputy Head Peter McAtameny was delighted by the success of the pupils and their willingness to participate in something community based.

Apart from demonstrating their writing skills, St. Maurice’s pupils will be queuing up in the autumn to demonstrate their broadcasting skills as Radio Heartbeat offers them the opportunity to broadcast the St. Maurice’s hour with news, views and entertainment presented by the senior pupils from the school.

For more information on Radio Heartbeat telephone the station on 01236 747777 between 11.00 am – 3.00 pm
Telephone Irene Dick on 01236 605744 or 07974 618660
Radio Heartbeat is funded totally by voluntary contribution
Radio Heartbeat is staffed totally by volunteers
